Overall grade counts ungraded work as zero. Early in a course it looks alarming and means very little. Current average divides only by the weight already graded, which is the honest read on how you are actually doing. Both are shown, because students are routinely panicked by the first while the second is fine.
Subtract the points already banked from the target, then divide by the weight of what is left, as a decimal. Banked 43.6 points, want 90, final worth 50%: (90 − 43.6) / 0.5 = 92.8. The division is the part people forget — the gap is not what you need to score, because the final is only part of the grade.
Then that grade is gone, and knowing it now is more useful than finding out later. The calculator shows the highest grade still reachable instead. Before accepting it, check whether the syllabus drops a lowest score, offers extra credit, or curves — any of those change the arithmetic.
