A cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh nothing like the same, so converting between volume and weight only works if you say what you are measuring. Choose your ingredient and this uses its actual density, alongside straightforward volume, weight and oven temperature conversion.

Why a cup is not a weight

A US cup is a volume - 236.6 ml. What that weighs depends entirely on the ingredient. A cup of water is 237 g, a cup of all-purpose flour about 125 g, a cup of honey about 336 g. Converting between the two therefore needs a density, which is what the ingredient selector supplies.

Even the same cup varies

Flour compresses. Scooping straight from the bag can pack 150 g or more into a "cup" that should hold 125 g - a 20% error, and enough to turn a cake dense. Spoon the flour into the cup and level it off, or better, weigh it. This is the entire reason serious baking recipes are written in grams.

Cups are not standard between countries

A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup 250 ml and an imperial cup 284 ml. An Australian tablespoon is 20 ml where everyone else uses 15 ml. All are listed separately, because a recipe that does not say which it means is a recipe you have to guess at.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is a cup of flour?

About 125 g for all-purpose flour in a US cup, though scooping straight from the bag can pack in 150 g or more. This is exactly why bakers weigh: the same "cup" can vary by 20%.

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?

No. A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml and an imperial cup is 284 ml. Australian tablespoons are 20 ml against 15 ml elsewhere. The converter lets you pick which system a recipe uses.

How do I convert a fan oven temperature?

A fan (convection) oven runs roughly 20°C or 25°F cooler than a conventional oven for the same result. The oven section converts between Celsius, Fahrenheit, gas marks and fan settings.
